Non-custodial means: if Exodus the company ceased to exist tomorrow, your crypto would be completely unaffected. You can restore your wallet on any compatible app using your recovery phrase.

Open your browser and navigate to exodus.com. Download only from the official site — fake Exodus apps exist and are designed to steal your funds.
The site detects your operating system automatically. Your platform will be highlighted at the top of the download options.
Select Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, or Android. On desktop you'll download an installer — .exe on Windows, .dmg on Mac.
Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen prompts. No administrator password required on most systems. Exodus installs in seconds.
Exodus opens automatically after installation. On first launch you'll see the welcome screen — you're ready to create your wallet.
Verify the download. On the official Exodus download page you'll find SHA-256 checksums. Compare them to your downloaded file using a checksum tool before opening it.
Setup takes about three minutes. The most important moment is writing down your recovery phrase — don't rush it.
You'll see two options: create a new wallet or restore an existing one. If this is your first time, choose Create New Wallet.
No email address, no username, no account registration. Within seconds you'll see your portfolio dashboard, already ready to use.
Go to Settings, then Backup. Exodus will display your 12-word phrase. Write every word in order, exactly as shown, on paper. This is the master key to everything.
Exodus will ask you to confirm a few of your words to make sure your backup is correct. Don't skip this — do it before you send any funds.
A fireproof safe, a safety deposit box, or a trusted location. Many users keep two physical copies in separate places.
Never store your 12-word phrase digitally. No photo. No note on your phone. No email to yourself. No cloud sync. Anyone with these 12 words has full, permanent access to your wallet — bypassing any password.
A password protects your wallet from anyone who gains access to your computer. It takes under a minute to set up.
Click the Settings icon in the left sidebar to open the Settings panel.
In Settings, click on Security. All protection options are here.
A dialog will appear. You're setting a password for the app itself — different from your recovery phrase.
At least 12 characters — uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Avoid dictionary words or obvious patterns. A passphrase works well: three unrelated words plus a number.
Enter the password a second time to confirm, then click Save. Exodus now requires this password for all sensitive actions.
In Security settings, turn on Password Lock on Startup. Exodus will ask for your password every time it opens or wakes from a locked state.
Forgot your password? Your password protects the app, not your funds. You can always restore your wallet from your 12-word recovery phrase and set a new password from scratch.
Sending from Exodus is fast — but verify every detail before you confirm. Crypto transactions cannot be reversed.
Click the cryptocurrency in your portfolio to open its dedicated view. You'll see your balance, recent transactions, and action buttons.
The Send button (upward arrow icon) opens the send dialog.
Never type addresses manually. Copy the address from the recipient, paste it, and verify at least the first and last 6 characters match exactly.
You can enter the amount in crypto or in USD. Exodus shows both values simultaneously as you type.
Exodus calculates the fee automatically (paid to the blockchain, not to Exodus). Higher fees = faster confirmation. You can adjust this if needed.
Review the summary: address, amount, fee. Confirm everything is correct. Click Send. The transaction is broadcast to the blockchain.
Address hijacking is real. Clipboard-hijacking malware silently replaces copied addresses with the attacker's address. Paste, then verify the first and last 6 characters visually before every transaction.
Each asset in Exodus has a unique receiving address. Share the right address and your funds arrive automatically.
Click the cryptocurrency in your portfolio. Make sure you select the correct asset — a BTC address won't receive ETH, and sending to the wrong network loses funds permanently.
The Receive button (downward arrow) shows your receiving details: your wallet address as text and as a QR code.
Click Copy to copy the full address, or let the sender scan your QR code directly from the screen.
Exodus shows a pending transaction in your history. Bitcoin: typically 10–60 min. Ethereum and most altcoins: 1–5 min. Solana: near-instant.
Self-custody is power. These practices protect it.
Security patches ship with every update. Enable auto-updates or check exodus.com regularly for the latest release.
Screen sharing during video calls has exposed wallets before. Close Exodus before sharing your screen — even if you're showing something unrelated.
Anyone — on Telegram, Discord, Twitter, email — who asks for your 12 words is a scammer. Exodus support has no way to ask for it and no need to.
Exodus integrates with Trezor. For holdings above a few thousand dollars, a hardware wallet adds a layer of physical protection that software alone cannot provide.
Avoid downloading untrusted software, browser extensions, or cracked applications on the device where you run Exodus. Malware targets crypto wallets specifically.
